My Petzval Report for Kwerfeldein

6

I was completely stoked when I got the chance to test the Petzval Lens for Lomography and the German photography magazine Kwerfeldein. I was afraid that I would end up wanting one for myself, and that’s exactly what happened.

My report on the Petzval Lens appeared recently on Kwerfeldein. I used the lens on my analogue and digital EOS and thoroughly enjoyed working with both, though I preferred shooting in analogue.

You really just have to get used to focusing with the lens and be aware that the sharp area is in the center. I didn’t consider that for a few photos, but hey, practice never hurt anyone. Unfortunately I had to send the lens back too soon, before I had a chance to test it longer.

The lens finds its glory, of course, in its amazing bokeh effect, but the packaging and focusing wheel really excited me as well! Maybe the body of a clunky Canon EOS doesn’t do it’s aesthetic justice, but that’s OK. In the end, it’s supposed to be fun, and I had a lot of fun indeed.

I actually conjured up my own aperture plate with a heart, which brought really great results. I also tried out the lens with an additional +2 close-up lens and it worked amazingly! You can control the amount of the signature swirling effect depending on your choice of background. Keeping that in mind, you can also make very standard photos with the Petzval Lens.

Whoever wants the Lens for themselves should take a look at it in a Lomography Store. Maybe you’ll also find a kind Lomographer in the area who will join you on a LomoWalk. But just a warning: you might catch the Petzval-fever after you take a look at it!

And now a look at some of the photos I created with the Petzval Lens:

I’m currently saving to be able to kick the Petzval fever and get a lens of my own, so I don’t have to suffer without one anymore! If you’ve always wanted to get a print of my photos, now’s your chance to buy one from me and support my Petzval-Fund! Read more about it on my Website or contact me at my LomoHome.

Yours,
Pearlgirl
