  • Goa's World Heritage Site...

    shared by jimjimm on 2014-04-09

some glimpses from one of India's UNESCO World Heritage Site here at Old Goa...a skip and a hop from where I stay.. This site is a complex of churches constructed by the Portuguese when they arrived in Goa...some 400 years ago...and it remains till today...as one of the most venerated places of worship in India... these are Living Monuments..a term referring to those heritage structures that are still in active use, by the locals. It's religious elements are the most eye catching, even for a not-so religious character as yours truly.......

  • Lent and Carnival

    shared by jimjimm on 2014-03-06

the time of Lent is upon us...all the masked revelry of Carnival is left behind for the Way of the Cross... Because the Portuguese colonials appeared in her history, Goa is the only place in India where Carnival celebrations still happen...preceding the season of Lent...

  • the hypnotist...

    shared by jimjimm on 2014-07-10

This is Jose Custodio de Faria, popularly known as Abade Faria, a local catholic monk who pioneered the study of hypnotism. He is referred to as.. the Father of Hypnotism. He was fictionalized by Alexandre Dumas in his famous work - "The Count of Monte Cristo" as the character of Faria, the italian monk who mentors Edmund Dantes, while in prison at the notorious Château d'lf and was portrayed superbly by Richard Harris in the 2002 movie adaptation. Abade Faria was a patriot, playing a pivotal role in the revolt of the Goan priests against the Portuguese colonials and later took part in the French Revolution. The statue installed in 1945, in tribute to Abade Faria is the most recognizable, landmark here in Panjim, Goa, welcoming us, as we drive into town. This exposure of the statue is overlapped with another recognizable imagery of Panjim...the beautiful window patterns of the Hotel Republica at the Old Secretariat Square

Hollant in Goa, India is one of few beaches free of the tourist hordes and is used only by the locals who fish traditionally from little boats..colored and designed differently..so as to mark their ownership...such places bring back memories of a Goa that was beautifully simple in the days of yore..
