Pictures from the first Ukrainian Fest of the season! In Chicago's Ukrainian Village, there are two competing churches, and two competing festivals. The day is full of Hopak dances, Verenyky, and vendors selling dresses and coral jewelry. Many of the people here don't speak any English at all - most people are fluent Ukrainian speakers, and there is a Ukrainian day school in the neighborhood that helps children keep their language skills. There is an excellent restaurant in the area called "Trizhub" that serves house-made horseradish-infused vodka. Delicious! Technically, my family is from south central Ukraine, although they are native German speakers. I don't speak Ukrainian, so I have to rely on my friends to translate. Camera: Canon Canonet - ISO 100, Shutter Speed 1/30th to 160th. Film: Safeway Brand Fujicolor, Expired 2002. Location: Chicago Illinois
