Thomas App's First Impressions of the LomoChrome Color '92 ISO 400 Film

A Lomography veteran, Thomas App is a film photography enthusiast who has already tested out many Lomography products. Today, he takes us to Saint-Nazaire's seaside in a series of photos taken with our new film, the LomoChrome Color '92 ISO 400 . The effects of this film, named after the year Lomography was created, fit perfectly with the nostalgic and soft vibes that emerge from the scenes, adding a touch of grain and a retro look to an overall rendering that remains faithful to the true colors.

Why did you choose this setup to try out the LomoChrome Color '92 film ? Can you tell us more about the idea behind this photo series?

It's been two years since I moved to Saint-Nazaire, and I've never really had the chance to travel around the area to take pictures, except during the summer when I went on a 24-hour road trip to take pictures alone. Since the beginning of spring, it's been easier to go out and I'm very fond of the seaside, when it's off-season – everything looks calm and deserted. Actually, I've been working on a photo series for a few months that's focused on capturing vacation spots, when it's not vacation time.

How would you describe the overall aesthetic of the film?

The LomoChrome Color '92 is more faithful to the colors than the LomoChrome Metropolis, and of course much more than the LomoChrome Purple and the LomoChrome Turquoise. The results look close to the scenes that I photographed. I particularly liked the bright colors and the coldness in the shadows. This creates a contrast between the colors and the darker areas that I can't find elsewhere.

Do you have a favorite picture taken with this film?

If I had to choose one, it would be the one on the creperie terrace. The scene is empty, the umbrellas and the chairs are lined up, it feels like it's off-season, or that the restaurant is not open yet - that's exactly what I wanted to convey by taking this photo. The redness of the parasols in opposition to the blue tones of the chairs contributes a great deal to energizing a scene where nothing is happening.

What do you like most about the LomoChrome Color '92 film?

To me, the film's main asset is its grain, and the softness of the colors. Grain is usually what makes me feel like a film has a true personality. I get the sort of grain I like with the Color Negative 800 as well, but to a lesser extent. In terms of colors, I prefer it to the Color Negative 400, for example, which has very bright colors. With the LomoChrome Color '92, I achieved very soft results and somewhat muted tones that blend very well with complex scenes.

How do you feel about a new color negative film being released ?

This year, we went through ups and downs, with the launches of new films, the stock shortages and the price increases – we started shooting film to experience emotions, but not to this extent! Each new film that is brought onto the market is good news - it confirms that film has its place in contemporary photography, and that its practice brings together more and more people. Seeing that new innovations are coming out, that brands keep experimenting to offer new film options, it gives photographers more tools to develop their creativity.

What do you think is the ideal setup to shoot this film?

I let a few months go by before shooting the LomoChrome Color '92, and I would say that the film is best suited for outdoors, on a sunny day, and preferably for landscape photography. I think the sand, the mountains and the rivers will give substance to the film. Summer is coming, it's time.

What camera did you use to take these photos?

It didn't take me long to choose! After all, it's the LomChrome Color '92, with its 90s atmosphere I took the camera I used to shoot with as a teenager, when I started taking analogue pictures. It's a 35 mm SLR that my father bought the year I was born and that I sometimes use still: the Olympus OM10. This camera is so important for me!

What are your hopes and dreams for the future of film photography?

Since it's time to make wishes, I'm going to play it like Aladdin and the genie of the lamp in the Disney movie (which by the way was released in 92!) If I had three wishes, I would wish for: the production of new reflex film cameras (in 35 mm and medium format), the return of the Fuji range, its instant photography range as well (I dream of shooting the FP 100C again), and finally for more labs to open in more cities and regions, with quality service. And for the possibility of making color and B&W prints with a photographic enlarger. Genie, can you do something for me?
