Newcomer of the Week: Davide Cerretini

As an budding portrait photographer, Davide Cerretini (@davidecerretini) aspires to translate the connection he made with his muse into compelling photographs. Throwing out technical rules out of the window, he experiments with blurs and soft colors. Here, our featured newcomer from Florence, Italy opens up about his passion for analogue photography.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

Hi, my name is Davide. I’m a 23-year-old aspiring photographer based in Florence. I started doing photography almost a year ago but I’m into art since I can remember. I prefer doing fashion shots and portraits.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

The Lomography Community is one of the reasons I started loving photography. The look of analogue shots is amazing both from amateurs and pros. Now, I’m happy because I can give back some inspiration as I took from other users.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

The rule I apply the most is No. 5: Approach the subject as close as possible. As a portrait photographer, I want to create a bond between me and the model during the shooting. I usually shoot with a 35 mm lens trying to be the close as possible to the subject.

In this digital age, why still film?

For me analog photography reflects values that are no longer popular these days. It requires patience and knowledge to be done very well. In addiction to this, the fact of not having as many shots as in digital photography makes every film photo more special and precious.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

I’m using very much the Yashica T4 in this period. It is very portable and it has an amazing sharp lens from Zeiss. Being completely automatic it allows me to concentrate more on the scene rather than on the technical aspects.

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

I would love to try the Fisheye No.2. As a skateboard-aesthetic lover I really like the mood that fisheye shots can create, mainly in street landscapes. But I have to admit that I'm really curious about the upcoming Diana Instant Square.

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

I’m truly obsessed by David Lynch’s filmography, the atmospheres he can create in his films are stunning. I also really like Aki Kaurismaki and Pasolini as movies directors.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

I really love this pic because for me it represents well the Lomography mood. It is soft focused (maybe out of focus), the horizon line isn’t straight but her look is strong and the picture works really well in my opinion. It is the demonstration that if you really feel the moment when you are shooting, the results will be satisfying; maybe not technically but emotionally for sure.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

If I have to mention one member in particular, Giulia Monacolli (@mell0nc0llie) for sure. Her pics are always stunning and very dreamy. For sure one of my favorite photographers even if our style is really different.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I’m here to discover more of this huge world of analog photography. I think the best way to grow everyday in this field is to be curious and hungry for knowledge and in this Community you can definitely learn a lot.
