Filipino Lomographer Mark Bermas and the Lomography Fisheye

Hailing from Paranaque City, Philippines, Lomographer Mark Bermas had a quick chat with the Lomography team about his experiences as a Lomographer and zooms in on using the Lomography Fisheye 2.

Please introduce yourself to the Lomography community.

My name is Mark Bermas, an AV Technician by profession, an introvert who loves to shoot in the Urban Jungle of Metro Manila. Photography and bicycle riding has been my passion. So after late night duties at work I used to walk down the streets or roam around somewhere with my bicycle and take some beautiful and interesting photos.

How did you start with photography?

I started from mobile photography, VSCO. Then my bike buddies named Jozen Sena and Jhom Centeno introduced me this unconventional type of photography. I feel stoked when I saw their masterpieces and I just thought, “Man this is so awesome, I should try this”. Then I bought the Minolta Hi-Matic AF which is my first film camera that I started to shoot film with. Also I bought Canon FT QL and this Lomo Fisheye 2.

Why choose film?

There’s an exciting feeling after you take a photo or finished a whole reel, not knowing the outcome of what you were shooting. My favorite is the E6 slides. It makes all the colors come to life and staggeringly beautiful that you don’t need to edit it. And one thing, am I the only one here who loves the smell of the film? hehe

Please tell us more about your experience with the Lomo Fisheye 2

This Lomo Fisheye 2 is so cool with an external viewfinder on it and I can play it thru multiple exposure and bulb settings. I can shoot as close as I can and It’s perfect for night photography.

Do you have some stories to share with us?

I’m in great gladness and pleasure to be part of this community. Lomography is a kind of photography that enables me to unwind and be refreshed after every stress at work. It is not just an outlet to showcase my talent but more importantly a way for an introvert like me to express myself to the people in an artistic way. People used to see me as a quiet and shy person but with Lomography it helps me to become a better person.

Any tips on how to maximize the use of the camera?

All recipes included in the box that you bought, try it all.

If your experience as a Lomographer can be summed up in one song, which song is it?

I love Math Rock just like the Lomography.. Fluffy by CHON is like me as a Lomographer. No lyrics. Just plain instrumental. I may be plain and shy but my photos will speak to you.

Any upcoming projects that we should watch out for?

Right now, I’m planning to shoot at night in carnivals, and make some experiment. I’m planning to go to Paco Park to shoot using some lomochrome film. I’m going to make some zines too in the future. And try other things in my unexposed films.
